Spring Mountain Capital
About
Spring Mountain Capital is a private investment management firm, founded in 2001 by John L. (“Launny”) Steffens, that focuses on alternative asset investing and offers investors a wide range of strategies designed to produce attractive risk-adjusted returns.
SMC is organized into five investment groups: Growth Equity, Total Return, Private Capital, Social Impact and Municipal Bonds. This combination provides the firm with expansive knowledge in each investment vertical, which improves investment decisions. We seek to take advantage of investment opportunities “in the gaps” where larger investors do not focus. Our investment solutions are designed to best meet clients’ current needs and reflect the flexibility, adaptability and insight that are essential when investing in today’s complex markets.
Our senior professionals possess decades of investment experience and have complementary professional backgrounds in the areas of wealth management, investment banking, private equity, financial analysis, quantitative research, international tax and finance. Based on our extensive network of personal and professional relationships, we are constantly searching for insightful investments from a wide range of sources.
History
Spring Mountain Capital was founded in 2001 by John L. (“Launny”) Steffens with the goal of providing customized investment management services to private clients. Mr. Steffens was formerly Vice Chairman of Merrill Lynch & Co., Inc. and Chairman of its U.S. Private Client Group. Under his leadership, the Merrill Lynch Private Client Group increased assets under management from $200 billion to $1.6 trillion and Merrill Lynch & Co. became one of the largest brokerage operations in the world. During the summer of 2001, Gregory P. Ho joined SMC as its President. Previously, Mr. Ho spent 16 years at McKinsey & Company, Inc., where he was the firm’s Chief Financial Officer.
Over the ensuing years, SMC has built a team of professionals with diverse backgrounds and complementary skill sets. The firm has 23 employees, including 17 investment professionals. The investment team is supported by an internal operations team that includes finance, legal, compliance, information technology and administrative professionals.
Throughout its history, SMC’s product suite has been designed to provide its clients and investors with the flexibility, adaptability and insight essential when investing in today’s complex markets. SMC offers diversified funds, co-investment opportunities, and customized separate accounts using actively managed private equity, hedge fund, special situation and municipal bond portfolio strategies, all with the goal of producing attractive, risk-adjusted returns.
